School of Rock

I just screened School of Rock for a seven-year-old and a seventy-year-old, which was quite an experience. Recalibration of reference points were necessary on both ends. Yes, there is life after Mozart. No, Billy Joel was never a rock star–that’s called pop music, or maybe soft rock, or probably schmaltz. Schmaltz means that it’s not really good, but it carries good associations…for some people. Yes, Jack Black is obtuse and juvenile and that is why he’s funny. Yes, that is a bad word. I’m sorry, I forgot there were bad words in the movie. No, you shouldn’t ever say it, but I don’t think mommy will be mad. Rock and roll isn’t perfect, remember? Sometimes, under extraordinary circumstances, we make exceptions. Who is that? That’s The Who. The. Who. I am answering your question. Never mind. His name is Kieth Moon. Yes, he was amazing. No, the band is called The Who.

Hillery

Hillery eventually learned not to say everything that came to mind. Some were too good not to write down.
